In early July, Watlow launched the new EHG SL10 process controller and safety limit. This new Watlow product answers the industry's need for a compact, reliable and scalable adjustable set point controller. The industry is also requesting flexibility in upgrading devices without replacing entire systems. Watlow's EHG SL10 answers all of these industry needs. It is a key component in a powerful system that integrates a heater, an adjustable set point temperature controller, high/low temperature alert, power switching device and a safety limit. "The major advantage of this product over other offerings is that we have incorporated all of the needs we heard from many customer visits into one product. It gives the customer the ability to upgrade the base module at any time so they benefit from a relatively low-cost entry point. However, the customer also has the option to increase performance of the product to meet application requirements, without starting over," said Royce Payton, product manager. In addition, the EHG SL10 is completely upgradeable with three modules that can be added to the base unit: display module, communication modules and display/communication module. The display module offers key features such as a field-adjustable set point and a three-digit, seven-segment LED display illuminated. The communication module offers user interface software, Modbus® RTU communications and RS 485. The display/communication module offers all of the features listed. These upgrade modules are easy to install because there is no need to reconfigure, rewire or reorder the base unit. Plus, no technician is needed for the installation, which creates a seamless, cost-efficient system. Reliability is a key issue when discussing the EHG SL10 process controller and safety limit. It is often compared to traditional thermostats and thermofuses. However, the EHG SL10 is vastly superior to both. It has eliminated the mechanical issues with both components and it has incorporated a "no-arc" relay as the process output switching device making it last longer. The "no-arc" relay is a mechanical relay with arc suppression provided through the use of smart electronics. This reduces the amount of arcing across the relay contacts and greatly extends the life of the relay. Relays without "no-arc" typically have a life of about 100,000 cycles at rated amperage, while the "no-arc" relay will have a life of over four million cycles. Another unique feature in the EHG SL10 is that it is one of the only known UL® recognized controllers that combines process control and safety limit control in a single package. The EHG SL10 is UL® 1998, CE 60790 and Semi-S2 approved. These compliances will reduce time and costs necessary for global agency testing and validation. "We worked closely with UL® to establish the tough standards for approval of a combination controller. We designed our product around meeting these safety requirements," said Payton. The EHG SL10 is designed for applications in semiconductor processing gas delivery lines, foodservice equipment (warming and serving equipment and food holding cabinets), laboratory equipment, medical equipment and packaging equipment (heat sealing bars and hot glue application equipment).
